Cuisinart DCC-1200BW Reviews
Cuisinart DCC-1200BW Review by TR1
Received this product a couple days ago and am already enjoying better cups of coffee without grounds and water leak. The only complaint I have is that when you are done making coffee and lift the lid to get the filter out the water that has condensated to the top drips off on the back of the lid. This does make it so you have to wipe behind the coffee pot everytime, but I'm told that this is normal with coffee pots with the larger lid tops. Other than that I have no complaints so far. Very good product.

OKAY, DO NOT BUY THIS, BUT IF YOU DO...THEN READ THE FOLLOWING SO THAT YOUR OWNERSHIP IS EASIER.
ALSO, YOU CANNOT JUST HAVE THIS IN AN OFFICE OR EVEN AT HOME FOR ANYONE TO USE...IT WILL BE RUINED PRETTY QUICKLY AND IT WILL TURN ITSELF OFF BEFORE THE WORKDAY IS ONE THIRD OVER. ANYONE USING THIS MUST FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS AND FIND OUT MORE ABOUT IT BY READING WHAT I HAVE WRITTEN BELOW.
This coffee maker was purchased about 20 + months ago. When first received it did not work...
I am doing some of this from memory, but since it was not working, I went into it trying to get it to flow...there are these small charcoal filters that you MUST use. If you do not, the machine will literally eat itself.
I pulled up the water filter not knowing better. The WATER filter is the only thing to block the inlet of the heater element for the drip water... for whatever reason, the design causes an overflowing coffee filter (which happens if the pot is not perfectly positioned or the coffee filter is not "snapped into place." or a few grains of coffee flow over the filter an trickle down into the area, where the "properly positioned pot" exerts upward pressure on a fairly crude plastic valve that opens the flow of dribbling hot coffee into the pot.
So, first this is giving you the idea that lots of things can go wrong. If you buy this reread what I wrote above before you attempt to operate.
Okay, so what happened did my machine die? Yes, almost immediately. Is there any good news? Yes, there may be some. I called their 800 number and they immediately replaced it (with the very same thing, "welcome to your own private hell"), but I did have to send back the received unit that did not work at my expense--a big time waster and additional expense.
But, hang on...there is more...embarrassing as this may seem...all is not what it appears. ONLY RECENTLY (more than a year later), have I discovered a feature that is completely mislabeled and marketed incorrectly.
There IS A BUTTON. "Oh no! You say!" Oh Yes!, I do say" The button is innocuously labeled 1-4. This button is ostensibly to heat hotter water, as per the instructions for four cups of coffee. In the beginning I thought that this machine was so intelligent that it would only let four cups of water through, etc... And it would be hotter. Lifting out the coffee mid-stream and getting some of this coffee, I thought Wow that tastes better in the early days... More recently, I NOW KNOW EXACTLY WHAT THIS BUTTON ACTUALLY DOES. THIS BUTTON SHOULD BE LABELED "HEATER ACTIVATOR" or something else.
Here is what happens, IF you turn this button on, then at a minimum the burner, which evidently NEVER runs will come on and the switch labeled "H, M, L" BECOMES ACTIVE AT LAST AND YOU COFFEE FINALLY STAYS HOT for several hours (the time is supposed to be four hours, but I have found that the internal timer will shut it off in less than four hours)...OTHERWISE YOUR COFFEE COOLS OFF...IT IS AS IF THE MARKETING DESIGN ASSUMPTION IS THAT WHEN YOU BREW 12 CUPS OF COFFEE THE THERMAL INTERTIA OF THE FRESH MODERTELY HOT COFFEE IS GOING TO KEEP IT HOT ENOUGH FOR YOU....WRONG!!!!!!! BUT, YOU WILL NEVER FIND WHAT I AM TELLING YOU IN THE MANUAL. I FIGURED THIS OUT QUITE BY ACCIDENT RECENTLY....20 + MONTHS LATER. SO, NOW I HAVE TO TURN THE 1-4 BUTTON ON ALL THE TIME IN ORDER TO KEEP THE POT OF ANY SIZE COFFEE WARM.
TO KEEP THE POT WARM, I HAD RESORTED TO PUTTING IT ON THE STOVE SLIGHTLY OFF OF THE BURNER SO AS NOT TO MELT THE HANDLE!!! WHAT A WASTE OF ELECTRICITY FOR LOUSY DIRECTIONS.
IF YOU BUY THIS COFFEE MAKER, YOU NEED TO READ THE ABOVE PARAGRAPHS...YOU WILL NOT FIND ANY OF THIS NON-OBVIOUS STUFF IN THE DIRECTIONS NOR WILL YOU INFER IT FROM THE LABELING. A BUTTON LABELED 1-4 WITH AN ORANGE LIGHT HARDLY TELLS YOU THE BURNER IS ALWAYS OFF UNLESS YOU PRESS IT. THE COFFEE WAS NEVER WARM ENOUGH...
I think the design is poor. I still have the pot, somehow the coffee it makes...and due in part to something wrong with the way the temperature is regulated does not really make a good cup of coffee.
To recap: 1) I am on my second unit, the first one ate itself (you could blame me, but with such poor instructions, that would be a bit unfair to a new owner), 2) mislabeled controls that are so fundamental to the operation is a completely unacceptable situation for any product. 3) You need to be detail oriented to use this. I am, but my gf is not. So, sometimes I come in and the pot is crooked on the burner...this will shut the inlet valve I mentioned earlier and cause you all sorts of problems. This unit is NOT WORRY FREE...AS IT SHOULD BE...
Sadly, not recommended. For the name you expect better and the design is unnecessary, mislabeled and problem causing....and it makes a mediocre cup of coffee to boot...

Considering all of the complaints about these coffee makers dying over the last few days, it is suspicious...
I've had this coffee maker for about 18 months. In the last few weeks, it will make the coffee just fine, but shuts off immediately afterwards. If I turn it back on to keep it warm, I have a 50/50 success rate of it staying on until the allotted 'auto shut-off time". It made the coffee this morning with no problems. I came back from dropping the children off at school and asked my husband "What's that smell?" Turns out it was the coffee maker in its death throws.
It's fried and considering what I paid for it, I'll just buy another brand instead of getting it fixed. Coffee makers are a one-task machine and they don't have many moving parts. It's just a heating unit and a tiny pump. I expect it to last longer.
I had a Krups for 7 years and even took it overseas with me. It worked great and never burned out, even using it daily on a transformer for 2 years. The carafe got smashed and I couldn't get another shipped because of our location. Now that we are stateside, I think it's time for another Krups.
